
32 years ago today, US hockey made history in Lake Placid, NY. This momentous event would later be known as the Miracle on Ice.
If you don’t know the story watch the movie Miracle, it is awesome. College athletes from the US beat the heavily favoured Soviets (who were all professional players). Players in the NHL weren’t allowed to compete in the Olympics at that time, but the European professionals were. The Soviet superstars relied on their individual skill, whereas the US worked as a single unit and stuck to a coordinated system.
